Project Name:Nankai Borehole Observatory

Location:
Kumano Basin
Project Description:

Website: http://offshore.geosc.psu.edu

The portal provides an interactive tool to view, scroll through, and download the formation pressure data for specified time windows. It is updated via rsync with JAMSTEC to pull the latest data from their seafloor cabled network (DONET) every 30 minutes.

The site allows you to select the sensors you want to see, select time ranges and sample interval, etc… (under “Edit Graph” menu).

There is also a functionality to annotate key events, which will be done for large earthquakes, drilling disturbances, etc… This functionality could also be incorporated in outreach or student projects, wherein students would describe the event(s) and provide links to relevant external information (e.g., USGS earthquake tectonic summaries). As one example, you can see the perturbation in pressures from drilling at the riser site in Nov-Dec, 2013 here, which is annotated: http://offshore.geosc.psu.edu/annotations/1

An example response to the Nov. 22, 2014 Omachi M6.2 earthquake can be viewed here: http://offshore.geosc.psu.edu/annotations/2
